<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/32591236395/in/dateposted/" title="Princess on a Princess Quilt"><img alt="Princess on a Princess Quilt" height="500" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/286/32591236395_c98ab1f23a.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I'd started this quilt well over a year ago (princess is now 9 months!) and would only work on this project sporadically. As Christmas approached I decided to kick it up a notch and try and get this one finished and over to its intended recipient. There were lots of blurry eyed late nights invested... but soo worth it.
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/31013371193/in/dateposted/" title="2016-12-23_06-44-24"><img alt="2016-12-23_06-44-24" height="500" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/305/31013371193_dfc7aa1983.jpg" width="375" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
For the quilt design, I wanted something that would allow me to feature the princess pictures out of this <a href="http://blog.fabricworm.com/2012/10/once-upon-time-by-alexander-henry.html" target="_blank">Alexander Henry 'Once Upon A Time' fabric</a>. I came across the <a href="https://thoughtandfound.wordpress.com/oh-my-stars/" target="_blank">'Oh My Stars!' Quiltalong</a>, which looked straight forward enough my for beginner quilt skills and would allow me to fussy cut those princess images for the center of different sized stars. It is a great tutorial, and if you check out the <a href="https://www.flickr.com/groups/ohmystarsquiltalong/pool/" target="_blank">Oh My Stars Flicker Group</a> you will see some creative and diverse applications of this approach.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/31450328400/in/photostream/" title="2016-12-23_06-44-41"><img alt="2016-12-23_06-44-41" height="281" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/313/31450328400_78f56fa15b.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I composed the layout as I went along. It took me a few shuffles of stars before I landed on a composition that was pleasing to me -- having a large central star surrounded by medium and smaller stars.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/31533204662/in/photostream/" title="2016-12-16_05-42-27"><img alt="2016-12-16_05-42-27" height="281" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/693/31533204662_9f623c392e.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
After I had pieced the quilt, I knew that there would be a strong probability that I would not be able to get it out to a professional long arm quilter for completing over the busy Christmas period. So, I decided that I would quilt it myself! I spray basted the quilt together and started by shadow outlining the stars in a <a href="http://quilttaffy.blogspot.com/2012/01/day-i-was-braveheart.html" target="_blank">Pearl DMC top thread - using this great tutorial for guidance</a>. And then further echoed that outline with Aurifil thread, until I reached the edges of the quilt. It was a lot of work but well worth the effort. I am enormously pleased with how this turned out.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/31450355200/in/photostream/" title="2016-12-23_06-46-28"><img alt="2016-12-23_06-46-28" height="500" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/483/31450355200_880d1698ce.jpg" width="281" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/31450350630/in/photostream/" title="2016-12-23_06-46-09"><img alt="2016-12-23_06-46-09" height="281" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/669/31450350630_a0c7c4019c.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
I have my next quilt in the very early planning stages... more to come in a future post.<br />
<br />
Wishing you a wonderful weekend. What fun plans do you have?<br />

I love the squish of the yarn and that it has interest when it is not entirely consistent and uniform. The color combinations and graduations are gorgeous. I found a seller on Etsy whose handspun yarn is fabulous: <a href="https://www.etsy.com/people/bockstarkknits">Bockstarkknits</a>.<br />
<br />
Have you seen any handspun sellers that you would recommend?<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/32293670046/in/photostream/" title="2017-01-15_02-53-14"><img alt="2017-01-15_02-53-14" height="281" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/311/32293670046_446f0e2316.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
<br />
I recently picked up some of Bockstarkknit's gorgeous yarn - a 2ply sock weight merino/firestar yarn - which I had fully intended to be a pair of socks. That is until I started unwinding the skein and rolling it into a ball... I then decided that it was too pretty to be hidden in a pair of shoes. It would be better suited for a hat.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/31377522284/in/dateposted/" title="Plane knitting Bockstark knits handspun"><img alt="Plane knitting Bockstark knits handspun" height="500" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/626/31377522284_20607fef96.jpg" width="281" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
<br />
The hat pattern that I selected was <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/wurm">Wurm by Katharina Nopp</a>, a free download on Ravelry. The yarn colorway was aptly named Bohemia, and for me, the Wurm hat also has an unconventional vibe that would work well with this gradient yarn.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/32326694251/in/dateposted/" title="Wurm"><img alt="Wurm" height="500" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/775/32326694251_f6eb81b5e2.jpg" width="281" /></a> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/32326688381/in/photostream/" title="Wurm"><img alt="Wurm" height="500" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/307/32326688381_beaf37893a.jpg" width="281" /></a><br />
<br />
If you have visited this blog a few years ago you may recall that <a href="http://sticks-strings.blogspot.com/2013/07/tyk-and-tynd.html">I have made the wurm hat before</a>. It is one of my favorite hats, and a really fun knit. Previously I had used 2 separate yarns for the knit rounds and the purl ridges. This time I worked from either end of my ball of gradient handspun yarn, so that it had a bold blast of color pop through between the purl ridges. I think it would have been equally effective if I had just knit from one side of the yarn, and you'd really see the gradient yarn play out.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/32296478262/in/photostream/" title="Wurm"><img alt="Wurm" height="500" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/737/32296478262_f24abdbb07.jpg" width="281" /></a><br />
<br />
So there you have it - a fun project for a gradient yarn, and a delightful knit to boot!<br />
<br />
Apologies for my absence here.<br />
Wishing you all good things for 2017.<br />
Love,<br />
Sam

It was fascinating to hear how her crafting story unfolded, and also the business decisions she had made along the way. I love her quilts and fabrics and thoroughly enjoyed listening to her creative process.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/29121275484/in/dateposted/" title="2016-09-17_03-38-01"><img alt="2016-09-17_03-38-01" height="281" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8201/29121275484_0fc31961c6.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
While I was at Fancy Tiger I did a little window shopping. Which turned into actual shopping, when these beauties came home with me. I'd been looking on Pinterest for a trick or treat tote to make for Naomi, and these fabrics are just the ticket! Loving the ouchy tooth image. Naomi got a kick out of that too!<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/29475108450/in/dateposted/" title="Cotton and Steel Halloween Fabrics"><img alt="Cotton and Steel Halloween Fabrics" height="375" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7498/29475108450_cfbc7bd0dd.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
The pattern I used is the <a href="http://www.sugarbeecrafts.com/2016/05/pocket-tote-library-bag.html#_a5y_p=5411106" target="_blank">Pocket Tote, Library Bag from Sugar Bee Crafts</a>. It is a great pattern - well written with clear supporting photographs (her selection of fabric is adorable too!). I like that this is kid-sized and has some structure to it. Naomi thinks the tote is awesome, so we have a winner!<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
In addition to this sewing project I've been working on a little capelet cardigan for Naomi in the fun Madeline Tosh yarn that has the 'rainbow paint splats' on it. I am winging this one, so hoping that it works out nicely.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/29475701430/in/photostream/" title="Rainbow splash cardigan"><img alt="Rainbow splash cardigan" height="375" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8847/29475701430_439d689ae4.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
And of course continuing to plug away on the lace section of the rosewater shawl. This is such a fun color for Halloween... not sure if it will be finished in time though.<br />
<br />

I had the good fortune to take an extended work trip to 2 places that I have been on my wish list - China and Japan.<br />
<br />
Shanghai was my first destination and although I spent most of my time in meeting rooms, I got to experience local food and culture and this amazing skyline:<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/28840247954/in/dateposted/" title="Shanghai by day"><img alt="Shanghai by day" height="500" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8094/28840247954_e40a2b751b.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />

<br />
Over the weekend I was able to visit the Yu Garden area in Shanghai, which is an interesting mix of older architecture and commerce. I enjoyed wandering around this area and seeing some craftsmen at work.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/28842798213/in/dateposted/" title="Yu Garden, Shanghai"><img alt="Yu Garden, Shanghai" height="375" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8859/28842798213_97acd219d1.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />

<br />
<br />
The next destination was Tokyo, and I was able to see the Meiji Jingu Shrine, the Imperial Palace, Harajuku, and one craft area in a local department store (bonus!)<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/28842797353/in/dateposted/" title="Meiji Jingu shrine barrels of sake"><img alt="Meiji Jingu shrine barrels of sake" height="375" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8167/28842797353_09b319a1de.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />

<br />
I was on a high after this trip, feeling extremely lucky to have had a taste of these great cities, and I hope to return to both places in the future.<br />
<br />
Long flights also means I have a little craft update too with lots of plane knitting time! Shortly before the trip I had received a recommended post in my facebook feed for a new-to-me designer: <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/janina-kallio-design">Janina Kallio</a>. I really liked the airy shawl designs, and selected one of these for the trip - <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/rosewater-2">Rosewater shawl</a>. I had the perfect yarn for it too - some handspun that I had found on Etsy a few years ago, in a gorgeous purple. The beginning garter stitch section was good simple knitting for a travel project.<br />
<br />

<br />
Have you had a fun summer?<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
I hope that you are all well.<br />
Best wishes,<br />

Have you been watching, and enjoying, the start of the Olympics? We watched the opening ceremony on Friday, and then watched the swimming qualifiers, table tennis, women's soccer and the men's gymnastics yesterday. Yes, I love watching the Olympics, and Naomi is also getting hooked... she is particularly fond of the gymnastics. (We can't wait to see Simone Biles... and are watching the uneven bar qualifiers right now).<br />
<br />During the opening ceremony I was able to cast on, and finish this fun girly poncho:<br />
<br /><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/28826484365/in/photostream/" title="poncho"><img src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8685/28826484365_db23512754.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="poncho"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<br />
The yarn is Knit Collage Gypsy Garden, in Shooting Star color way. It is a bulky thick/thin wool and mohair yarn that has 'flair' spun into it -- glittery ribbons and colorful threads, little ribbon roses and flowers. It really is a fun yarn! My very thoughtful sister bought a skein for me when she was visiting the Purl Soho store in New York. I picked up a 2nd skein on Ravelry destash to ensure that I'd have enough yardage for a project (each skein is 32 yards).<br />
<br /><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/28148252761/in/dateposted/" title="Yarn off sis"><img src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7586/28148252761_2f6e094e3d.jpg" width="500" height="335" alt="Yarn off sis"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<br />
This didn't start out as a poncho, It was intended to be a cowl. For me. I searched on Ravelry for a pattern that used a super bulky yarn, with less that 150 yards, and picked the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/marian-2" target="_blank">Marian cowl pattern by Jane Richmond designs</a>, which is a free Ravelry download. <br />
<br />
At first I knit as instructed in the pattern, using a seed stitch. However there was too much going on for my taste with the 'flair' plus the seed stitch pattern. So I frogged and worked the cowl instructions in a simple stocking stitch. That worked much better - you could really see the thick and thin yarn, and all the sparkles and embellishments.<br />
<br /><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/28826570505/in/photostream/" title="poncho"><img src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8748/28826570505_00b99c8b61.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="poncho"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<br />
I asked Naomi to model the cowl for blog photos for me, and when she tried it on it fell over her shoulders like a poncho. She fell in love with it! So there you have it - Momma's cowl, became a fun girly poncho for Naomi!<br />
<br />
Wishing you a good rest of your weekend.<br />

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/22083828185/in/album-72157659284087099/" title="The whole gang"><img src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5705/22083828185_05e207afe9.jpg" width="500" height="334" alt="The whole gang"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<br />
I had all good intentions to create a 1 year anniversary gift for her: A wedding portrait cross stitch, similar to the <a href="http://sticks-strings.blogspot.com/2016/06/stitch-people-cross-stitch-family.html" target="_blank">cross stitch portrait my brother had requested</a>. Unfortunately it has been another couple of nutty work weeks so I didn't have the free/craft time to pull it off. The silver lining is that the traditional 2nd year anniversary gift is 'cotton'... so that can be the new goal! Sorry, Sis xxx<br />
I have a reasonable start, and have been enjoying working on my Sis in her fabulous wedding dress. Pretty cute, huh! (She's ridiculously cute in real life too). I cant tell you how much fun these portraits are to work on.<br />

<br />
Now I just need to keep this little fella from chewing up the threads!!!<br />
(Isn't that a guilty look)<br />

While I'm not a big sports fan, or Star Wars fan for that matter, I do like a good event and last night was a great one! We took a pedicab to the baseball field, which is always a fun way to get to the park quickly. The folks that operate the pedicabs are a delightful bunch and yesterday's experience was no exception - once we reached our destination, the driver had Naomi squealing in delight as he treated her to her very own 'figure of eight' fairground style turns! I love this shot we were able to snap - the Colorado shirt with the iconic Union Station in the background. Aah gott a love Colorado.<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/28395254122/in/photostream/" title="2016-07-23_04-50-08"><img src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8539/28395254122_339265af49.jpg" width="500" height="281" alt="2016-07-23_04-50-08"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<br />
There were lots of cool details at the ball park last night: A Star Wars costume parade around the field. Dinger, the mascot, donned in a Jedi cloak and carrying a light saber. I also enjoyed that each time a player was announced on the board, he had been assigned a Star Wars character. Naturally the Rockies represented the good guys, and the opposing team were all Stormtroopers! My favourite was the bearded Charlie Blackmon as Chewy!<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/28469678916/in/photostream/" title="2016-07-23_06-19-21"><img src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7671/28469678916_c39e3477fa.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="2016-07-23_06-19-21"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<br />
As we were at a Rockies game it seemed only right that I dug out my Rockies sock yarn to knit on. Isn't this colorway perfect! I always get a few funny looks when knitting at a game - but this is a few hours of sitting time... a perfect time to knit! Does anyone else knit at sporting events? I know there used to be annual stitch and pitch events where knitters would gather and craft at the game. Soo much fun!<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/28217823300/in/photostream/" title="2016-07-23_05-46-07"><img src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8629/28217823300_662240f7d7.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="2016-07-23_05-46-07"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/28412928692/in/photostream/" title="Rockies Sockies"><img src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8395/28412928692_b104a77ac6.jpg" width="500" height="335" alt="Rockies Sockies"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script></br>
Plus the Rockies colorway beats the boring black man sock that I also have on the needles right now.<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/28234889090/in/photostream/" title="Boring Black man sock"><img src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8734/28234889090_63d4acebfe.jpg" width="500" height="335" alt="Boring Black man sock"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<br />
Hope you have had a fun weekend too.<br />
Love,<br />SamSamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16281464740064690657noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35111622.post-45097704205154455202016-07-17T14:24:00.000-06:002016-07-17T14:24:01.755-06:00GnomesI've been having fun putting together a couple of gifts for a friend that likes gnomes. First is a simple wooden box that is embellished with a cross stitch gnome on the lid.
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/28121986472/in/dateposted/" title="Gnome cross stitch box"><img alt="Gnome cross stitch box" height="335" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/8/7445/28121986472_f3efac0d50.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
The box is a <a href="http://www.target.com/p/hand-made-modern-wood-grid-top-box/-/A-16782836">Hand Made Modern wooden box from Target</a>, and the gnome pattern comes from the <a href="https://www.thefrostedpumpkinstitchery.com/collections/all-pdf-patterns/products/woodland-sampler-pdf-cross-stitch-pattern" target="_blank">Frosted Pumpkin Stitchery's Woodland Sampler</a> (you have to decrease the height of the gnome hat to make it fit). I started with cross stitch thread but wasn't getting the coverage I wanted, and then changed to use sock yarn from my stash.
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/27945202750/in/photostream/" title="Gnome cross stitch box"><img alt="Gnome cross stitch box" height="335" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/8/7301/27945202750_0f65b0f048.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
I think it turned out pretty cute. Turns out that I wasn't the only one - Naomi asked if I would make a box for her too. For her box I opted for a simple initial in colours that match her room.
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/28263196522/in/photostream/" title="Cross stitch boxes"><img alt="Cross stitch boxes" height="335" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8568/28263196522_7ffb1a4836.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
This is a simple, quick and easy project. There are some fiddly elements - dealing with the lid as you stitch and tucking in the end of each threads But otherwise it's a straightforward make, with a cute result.
<br /><br />
The other project is a storage basket made from the adorable Heather Ross gnome fabric, together with some Michael Miller polka dots.
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/28084312860/in/photostream/" title="Gnome yarn basket"><img alt="Gnome yarn basket" height="359" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7751/28084312860_126699b8ec.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
The pattern is a modified version of the popular, free pattern: <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/sewing/home-decor/1-hour-basket-tutorial/136408">One Hour Basket from Hearts and Bees</a>. My modifications were to make it larger:
<br />
<ul>
<li>I cut 4 pieces of fabric that were 17 x 21 inches</li>
<li>The square cutouts for each corner were 3.5 inches</li>
<li>I folded over approx 3 inches of the polka dot fabric at the top of the basket and top stitched across the top and bottom of this polka dot band</li>
</ul>
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/27751210973/in/photostream/" title="Gnome yarn basket"><img alt="Gnome yarn basket" height="357" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/8/7542/27751210973_4d96c2085c.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
The storage basket is quite floppy - which could be a result of the larger size. But if I were to do this again, I'd probably use a stiffer interfacing. However, with enough yarn stashed inside, it stands up quite nicely :)
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/28367012505/in/photostream/" title="Yarn in the basket"><img alt="Yarn in the basket" height="430" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8894/28367012505_2e51c2851d.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
Hope that you are having a fabulous weekend.<br />
Love,<br />

I've been absent due to work and family travels. It's been a great few weeks. Of course travel time means lots of craft time, which has resulted in a pair of handspun socks.<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/27835008700/in/photostream/" title="Handspun socks"><img alt="Handspun socks" height="375" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7297/27835008700_fa873fe466.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
A few weeks back I picked up this wonderful yarn from BockStark knits on Etsy. I am really fond of handspun and these colours are very soothing.<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/26996746896/in/dateposted/" title="Bockstark handspun"><img src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/8/7398/26996746896_e6caabc996.jpg" width="500" height="335" alt="Bockstark handspun"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<br />
There is no pattern for these - just a plain old vanilla sock. I thought that best with all the interest from the yarn. <br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/28037905631/in/photostream/" title="Handspun socks"><img alt="Handspun socks" height="375" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/8/7460/28037905631_ef73158eae.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
These kept me company on our travels to, and within, the UK. Plane knitting, train knitting etc... We had such a great time with family in the UK, and were able to get out and about - walking the Roman walls in Chester, visiting historic buildings, checking out Wimbledon, walks along the beach front...
<br />

<br />
One crafty highlight from the trip: There is a factory that prints Liberty fabric not too far from where my family live. Adjacent to the factory is a factory shop!!! My sister took to me the factory store one weekend, and I picked up a few bags of Liberty scraps as well as some pre-cut bundles. We had such a great time, and came home with fabulous loot, that I was able to tempt my Mum to take me back there the following week. It would be dangerous if this was on my doorstep! <br />

Well, of course I was going to say yes to that!
<br /><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/27014919154/in/dateposted/" title="Stitch people: brother family"><img src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7354/27014919154_5e75af8bf2.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Stitch people: brother family"></a><script async src="https://embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script><br />
I enjoy the research process almost as much as the crafting itself, and it wasn't long before I found the <a href="http://stitchpeople.com/" target="_blank">Stitch People</a> site. What a fantastic source of inspiration with numerous customized family and wedding portraits. Plus you can order their book to guide you through creating your own custom versions: The book includes the designs for multiple different hair, outfit and accessory types, plus it has a great section for different dog and cat types. Naturally I now own a copy.
<br /><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/27551983881/in/photostream/" title="Stitch people: brother family"><img src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7345/27551983881_649c65e290.jpg" width="500" height="335" alt="Stitch people: brother family"></a><script async src="https://embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script><br />
I started by picking out some photographs of the happy family, and then looking in the Stitch People book for those characteristics and outfits that would represent the family members. Once I had the selected design elements I copied them onto graph paper - this became my 'pattern'. From there it was a case of picking from my supply of threads to create the portrait. I cant tell you how much fun I had with this process, trying to make sure I reflected some of the details of this family:
<ul>
<li>Ooh she likes sparkle - let me stitch her a pink sparkle top</li>
<li>I rarely see her without heels... yep, these ankle boots with a heel are perfect!</li>
<li>Now for him, a black t-shirt is a frequent go-to top</li>
<li>One of his arms is a multicolour sleeve tattoo and the other is sepia, let me build that in ...making sure I get the arms correct (yes, there are even hints and tips for how you add details such as tattoos into your design)</li>
<li>The dogs are both German Shepherds but with their own distinct colouring that I was able to build in</li>
</ul>
<br /><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/27551983721/in/photostream/" title="Stitch people: brother family"><img src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7678/27551983721_568b86765d.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Stitch people: brother family"></a><script async src="https://embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script><br />
As for the saying, I found this one on Pinterest - it is short, simple, but really conveys the desired feeling behind the original request.
<br /><br />
I am grateful that I get to spend time with my family very soon, and deliver this one in person. <br />
What are you grateful for?<br />

They have spent time with me travelling in England, Scotland, Delaware and California. Nice, simple, vanilla sock knitting for plane and train travel.
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
The yarn is from Zauberball and gradually changes through the colors of the rainbow. I like to knit from either side of the ball to make stripes. If you haven't used it before, the Zauberball is a great sock yarn. I have used it a couple of times now and have been really pleased with how well it holds up with plenty of wear and washes. But most of all I just love how bright and happy these colors are.
<br />

<br />
<br />
Speaking of bright and happy, Naomi finished Kindergarten last week. It blows my mind how fast the time is flying by... how is it possible that these wee ones grow so fast? I really like the school she attends and she has some lovely teachers. And of course, end of year = teacher appreciation time. I kept it simple this year, opting for Starbucks gift cards for each of her teachers. But I couldn't completely skip the handmade element, and so quickly assembled these cards (thanks to some <a href="http://brendid.com/the-5-minute-coffee-teacher-appreciation-gift/" target="_blank">free printables from Bren Did</a>). <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/27325950266/in/photostream/" title="Teacher appreciation"><img alt="Teacher appreciation" height="335" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7325/27325950266_ff5ef5e0bb.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="https://embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
The first couple of years in daycare and preschool I had actually made gifts for the teachers. It's hard to know how handmade gifts are received. To me, there is something special about an item that has been lovingly handcrafted, but I also recognize that it is not to everyone's taste. Now starbucks gift cards on the other hand, while arguably lacking in originality, has to be a hit, right? Always hard to know, and likely depends upon each individual recipient. (Well, there was a little side ramble :)<br />
<br />
Hope you are having a great holiday weekend with loved ones,<br />

It started with the yarn... this pigeonroof studios gradient yarn is soo beautiful. I had an idea in my mind of what I was aiming for, and used my 'go to' pattern for baby girl sweaters - Elizabeth Zimmerman February Baby Sweater - as the basis for the project. It turned out exactly as I had envisioned... don't you love it when that happens!<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/27083622232/in/dateposted/" title="Pretty in pink"><img alt="Pretty in pink" height="375" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7046/27083622232_4a3552cf2e.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="https://embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Here are the modifications that I made to EZ's pattern:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>EZ calls out a number of stitches to cast on. Instead of casting on this amount, cast on the number that it recommends that you should have after the first round of increases. </li>
<li>Follow the pattern for the garter stitch neck band and spacing of buttons</li>
<li>Instead of using the lace pattern that EZ recommends, knit a simple stocking stitch, retaining the garter stitch edging and button spacing. (I love the lace pattern, but really wanted the color gradient to stand out with a simpler stitch pattern)</li>
<li>When starting a new color mini skein, work the first row as *Knit 1, Slip 1* repeated across the stocking stitch portion of the pattern - this results in a subtle zigzag between the 2 colors (vs a hard line shift from one color to the next)</li>
<li>For the sleeves, work 4 ridges of garter stitch and cast off.</li>
</ul>
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/27083618562/in/photostream/" title="Pretty in pink"><img alt="Pretty in pink" height="335" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7421/27083618562_118fa735b3.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="https://embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
<br />
It's very simple, but I think quite effective as a result of the beautiful yarn.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/27083620172/in/photostream/" title="Pretty in pink"><img alt="Pretty in pink" height="335" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7067/27083620172_95a41a32e9.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="https://embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
The final touch was to add buttons. These are a simple transparent, pale pink, gem-like bead from Joanns Fabrics. Aside from being a gorgeous button, I liked that the transparency picked up on the color of the yarn that it was placed on.
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/27083617282/in/photostream/" title="Pretty in pink"><img alt="Pretty in pink" height="335" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7299/27083617282_f993d85ae1.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="https://embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
All in all, it was a really enjoyable knit, and I am excited to gift it next month. Ooh and who doesnt love buying dresses for little girls? I found this super cute ballet pump design dress which picks up on some of the pinks in the cardigan.
<br />
<br />
I hope you are having a great weekend. It finally turned into summer here, so I've been enjoying time outdoors. Take care,<br />
<br />
Love,<br />

You know, something you have made, fell in love with, and wear all the time?<br />
<br />
For me, one of my favourite, and most-worn projects, is <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/sam/clapotis">my Clapotis</a>. This scarf has been worn a <u>lot</u>. It is my 'go to' scarf for plane travel (I naturally seem to run cold and therefore love this big scarf to snuggle in), but works well with my winter jacket, and as a shawl when the air conditioning is blasting in the office. <br />
<br />
As well as the scarf is holding up, I felt that having a backup would be in order. Enter Clapo-Ktus:<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/26426648153/in/dateposted/" title="Clapo-ktus"><img alt="Clapo-ktus" height="335" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7130/26426648153_3deb192afc.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="https://embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/clapo-ktus">Clapo-Ktus is free pattern</a> (yay!) and is a cross between the popular Clapotis and Baktus designs. It is a straightforward knit, suitable for an advanced beginner. And for anyone who is a lover of sock yarn, this is a great way to use one of your beloved colorways. The yarn I selected is a <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/skein-top-draw-socks">Skein Top Drawer sock in colourway Envy</a>. This yarn is deliciously soft, so perfect for the project. And the colorway is divine! I was really pleased with how the fabric worked up and that there was no pooling.
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/26426649193/in/photostream/" title="Clapo-ktus"><img alt="Clapo-ktus" height="500" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7760/26426649193_77fb83c9a2.jpg" width="330" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="https://embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/11500319193/in/album-72157631673727013/" title="skein"><img alt="skein" height="335" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2865/11500319193_c4800d93af.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="https://embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
The pattern mentions that you can use a single skein of sock yarn to make the shawl, which is a fun way to use those single skeins. I wanted something that was going to be a little bigger for that snuggle factor, and elected to use 2 skeins. The end result is that I have a decent size shawl to wrap up in.
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/26996747706/in/photostream/" title="Clapo-ktus"><img alt="Clapo-ktus" height="375" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7277/26996747706_2a73db46c3.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="https://embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I look forward to testing this one out on an upcoming trip.
<br />
<br />
And what post would be complete without a little yarn love? These beauties made their way into my stash this week:
<br />
<br />
A handspun sock yarn from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/people/bockstarkknits" target="_blank">Bockstark knits on Etsy</a>. There is something so very special about handspun yarn, and this skein is absolutely gorgeous. And anyone that knows me, knows that I enjoy thoughtful details... just look at this cute stitch marker that shipped with the yarn! Yep, I see repeat purchases in my future.<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
I also picked up 2 skeins of sock yarn from Blue Moon Fiber Arts. Every now and again the Blue Moon team offer mystery grab bags for sale, and these were my mystery skeins - aren't they gorgeous! I love how they work together, but also on their own. I see some fall knitting with these colours!
<br />

Wishing you a lovely day ahead,<br />

<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/25143661444/in/dateposted/" title="Gradient yarn"><img alt="Gradient yarn" height="334" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1646/25143661444_c00dc14f30.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="https://embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
The colors are precious, and perfect for a princess.
I had an idea that this would make a gorgeous baby sweater and toyed between the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-tea-leaves" target="_blank">Tea Leaves cardigan</a> design and my go-to sweater:<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-sweater-on-two-needles-february" target="_blank"> Elizabeth Zimmerman's February baby sweater</a>.<br />

<br />
<br />
The go-to pattern won, albeit a modified version of the original, using stocking stitch instead of the lace pattern. I chose to keep it simple so that the gradient yarn would be the star of the show.

<br />
<br />
This was a perfect project for this last week's plane journey to see my step daughter graduate from the University of Central Florida with a Biology degree magna cum laude. We are incredibly proud of her, and excited for what comes next as she embarks on a summer of research projects before heading onto post-grad study.

That's right, May 1st and we still have snow. It looks pretty out, and when the sun starts to poke through the clouds it will be gorgeous. But I'm really ready for some warmer weather. In the meantime, I'll take advantage of another cosy Sunday indoors.<br />
<br />
I have another finish to share - the Habu scarf:<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/26724137446/in/dateposted/" title="Habu scarf"><img alt="Habu scarf" height="335" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1705/26724137446_26e1f3ab5d.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br /><br />
The yarn is Habu N-80 which consists of 4 strands of merino that are wrapped in a very fine black silk thread. I had selected 3 colors that looked good together and worked them as color blocks (although I think it would have pretty to have alternated the strands of color too). The pattern that I started with was the fringe scarf from Cocoknits... but the fringe was kind of a pain to knit, and so I used the basic instructions for the shape of the scarf and simply omitted the fringe portion of the instructions. It was a good decision - there is enough interest in the yarn itself, and the simpler style feels more elegant.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/26724137816/in/photostream/" title="Habu scarf"><img alt="Habu scarf" height="335" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1608/26724137816_47da7510a5.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br /><br />
As soon as I saw this yarn I knew who I was going to knit this for. And I had fully intended that this would be tucked away in the Christmas gift box for her -- I collect gifts for people throughout the year and store them away in a big ole box until Christmas or birthdays come up. But I am the worst when it comes to patiently waiting to give a gift... so my dear friend received a 'Just Because' gift this weekend! It was a winner :)<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/25465320161/in/dateposted/" title="Habu N-80"><img alt="Habu N-80" height="375" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1520/25465320161_7539fc335e.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br /><br />
Stay safe and warm today.<br />
In addition to some cosy indoor time, I anticipate there may be some of this!<br />

These are beginner friendly, and a big part of that appeal is they are small enough that you can finish fairly quickly.
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/26526743072/in/dateposted/" title="Birth Announcement"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1588/26526743072_52378f3a50.jpg" width="500" height="335" alt="Birth Announcement"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<br />
I had been working on <a href="https://www.thefrostedpumpkinstitchery.com/collections/beginner-friendly/products/pen-pals-no-202-pdf-cross-stitch-pattern">Penpals 202</a>, which I believe was originally a Valentine's release. I bought this as a kit, with the polka dot linen and delightful cosmo threads, from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/thecottageneedle" target="_blank">The Cottage Needle on Etsy</a> (I highly recommend them for your stitch goodies). While I was working on this, I received the good news that a dearly loved couple were expecting a baby girl. As the months went by I saw that they were decorating the nursery with pink and hearts. That triggered an idea - this cross stitch pattern would make a cute birth announcement.
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/26016407793/in/photostream/" title="Birth announcement"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1591/26016407793_5f1cb78ee5.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="Birth announcement"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<br />
Once I worked the penpals design, I needed to add the personalization. A quick Google search later I came across <a href="http://www.stitchpoint.com/eng/tool/alph/cross-stitch-writing-tool.php" target="_blank">Stitchpoint</a> - a site that lets you pick a font and type in the letters and characters that you want to stitch. I opted for the Monaco font - I wanted the lettering to be delicate and not overpower the penpals design. For the name I used the darkest of pinks from the design. For the birth details I used the medium pink. My thought here is that the name would stand out a little bit from the rest of the details.
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/26346221340/in/photostream/" title="Birth announcement"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1602/26346221340_6a536e5055.jpg" width="500" height="335" alt="Birth announcement"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<br /><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/26533011021/in/photostream/" title="Birth announcement"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1574/26533011021_e116faa0ee.jpg" width="500" height="281" alt="Birth announcement"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<br />
For the finishing I found a frame at TJ Maxx that would work with the furniture in the nursery, and also complement the cross stitch design. I cut some card and batting that would fit the frame (I like how the batting adds some 'poof' to the finished design, centered the design over the top and then laced up the back. (There are a number of online tutorials showing how to do lacing... this was my first time finishing/framing a project myself, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it turned out).

It was a good decision!
<br />
<br /><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/26194542470/in/dateposted/" title="Pretty baby booties and cap"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1542/26194542470_1777b44dac.jpg" width="500" height="335" alt="Pretty baby booties and cap"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script><br />
The previous colours were nice... they just didn't feel <i>really</i> special. These new yarns however - Wow! First the colours - I feel that they are classic and delicate. Perfect baby colours. The cream yarn is Blue Sky Alpaca Royal, and to use their description: A very rare quality of luxury alpaca fiber. You just want to snuggle with this. (Or as friend of mine would say, you want to have a complete body suit made out of this!) The peach yarn is Louise Harding Orielle in color Blossom. This one is 97% baby alpaca (more snuggly softness) with a silver princess sparkle that runs through it (and the sparkle does not detract from the softness). If there is any downside it would be that the stitch definition is not as crisp in the alpaca yarns compared to the cotton. But you could argue that this just adds to the charm of the alpaca. Always a silver lining :)
<br />
<br /><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/25862522294/in/photostream/" title="Pretty baby booties"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1547/25862522294_615b85b831.jpg" width="500" height="335" alt="Pretty baby booties"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script><br />
The pattern is <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/159369804/p-a-t-t-e-r-n-knitting-baby-set-baby">Knitting Baby Set by Elena Mitchell (Solnishko43 on Etsy</a>). The pattern is extremely detailed with a couple of size options: Excellent written instructions and accompanying photographs for each step. As I was knitting I felt that this must be a very talented knitter that created this design - there are some steps in the design, such as how each row starts and stops that give a very professional finish. If you have some baby knitting in your future I recommend checking out her patterns on Etsy. The finishing touch was to add the pearl beads as a final decorative element. These are fit for a princess! <br />
<br /><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/26194542400/in/photostream/" title="Pretty baby hat"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1472/26194542400_b50cc8e1a4.jpg" width="500" height="335" alt="Pretty baby hat"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script><br />
Now, if only this snow would let up I could go and get them in the mail :) <br />
I am taking full advantage of the snow day - crafting, blogging and quality family time. It is a good day!
How would you/do you spend your snow days?

Stay safe Coloradoans, and wishing everyone a great weekend,

The timing was perfect because we were able to catch a spring training game with the Rockies. That's a win:win for my husband and I... He gets to watch the game while I get to enjoy some great weather and solid knitting time :)
<br />

<br />
It was really good to get away for a few days, see family and enjoy some delightful weather (thankful to have missed the blizzard back in Colorado). I mainly worked on the Clapo-ktus scarf on the road trip and have been making good progress - almost at the half way mark! I have since flitted between the other projects on the needles:
<br />
The Habu Gauzy scarf (now on the 3rd colour):
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/26265652572/in/photostream/" title="Gauzy scarf"><img alt="Gauzy scarf" height="375" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1561/26265652572_3784df3871.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
Some baby booties:
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/26214009175/in/photostream/" title="Rev 1 colours"><img alt="Rev 1 colours" height="335" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1647/26214009175_6dbef68164.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>

<br />
Although I am not loving the dusky pink and have since been reworking them in this glittery peach and cream combination.
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/25941127250/in/photostream/" title="New Colours"><img alt="New Colours" height="335" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1665/25941127250_9e1505320f.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
In addition to the knitting I was able to pick up some fabulous Blue Moon Fiber Arts yarn, which is soo bright and happy! I'm eager to get one of these skeins on the needles! But first, I need to finish those baby booties.
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/25609243544/in/photostream/" title="Blue Moon Splurge"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1462/25609243544_0e131d9310.jpg" width="500" height="500" alt="Blue Moon Splurge"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

I think it has an Eileen Fisher vibe to it. This scarf is intended as a gift, but might be hard to part with. :) <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/25748059826/in/dateposted/" title="Scarf progress"><img alt="Scarf progress" height="375" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1692/25748059826_a3e905a8c9.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Aside from the scarf, I don't have a lot of crafty progress to share this week. In my free time I've been on a kick to purge the house of unnecessary 'stuff'. Do you ever feel like that? I'd made a good start, but certainly have plenty more de-cluttering to go. It was nice to get a start on it. Could it be that spring is on the way and that drives the desire to have our homes feeling clean and airy?
<br />
<br />
The purging does not include yarn :)
I welcomed the following beauties into my stash - a lovely gradient yarn from Pigeonroof studios. There are a few babies due in our family this spring and summer, and I was thinking that this would be adorable for a little baby girl project.
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
The other beauty we welcomed into our home this week is Macky. Look at this handsome soul! His Momma is going to be travelling for some months and so we have the good fortune to have another furry family member until she returns. I'm thrilled and have been enjoying snuggles.
<br />

It is 4 fine strands of merino that are wrapped in a black silk thread. I picked up 3 different colors to make a gauzy colour block scarf. I think this yarn looks really elegant and was eager to cast on immediately.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/25465320161/in/dateposted-public/" title="Habu N-80"><img alt="Habu N-80" height="375" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1520/25465320161_7539fc335e.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br /><br />
I am using the <a href="http://store.cocoknits.com/patterns/nora-fringe-scarf/#.VtxWe_krKM8" target="_blank">Coco Knits Nora Fringe scarf</a> pattern, minus the fringe. It is a basic garter knit scarf, and because the fine yarn is knit on larger needles, the resulting fabric is beautifully airy and light. I'd spent most of my craft time working on this, and am making good progress so far. This one is a gift knit.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/24927532524/in/dateposted-public/" title="Habu N-80"><img alt="Habu N-80" height="375" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1564/24927532524_2a2dfd395f.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br /><br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/25190487559/in/dateposted-public/" title="Habu scarf"><img alt="Habu scarf" height="375" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1566/25190487559_a3025b0ede.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br /><br />
Our new little furry family member took it upon himself to remind me that I also have the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/clapo-ktus" target="_blank">Clapok-tus</a> scarf in progress too, by running laps with it around the house. Aah he's a yarn lover - skeins of yarn and knitted socks or slippers are not safe around this little fella! But look at this bundle of sweetness... yes, all is forgiven!
<br /><br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/21729369681/in/dateposted/" title="So sweet"><img alt="So sweet" height="500" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5768/21729369681_870863e314.jpg" width="281" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br /><br />

<br /><br />
His little show did prompt me to spend some time on this scarf too. Naturally this one is going much more slowly, but is very soothing to knit on. I love the colours in this soo much, and think that my natural preference is to work on the smaller needle sizes.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/25531893916/in/dateposted-public/" title="Sock yarn scarf"><img alt="Sock yarn scarf" height="375" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1492/25531893916_aaf66b3215.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br /><br />
That's all from here. It is girls day today and we off to pick up the painted pots from last weekend's party.
Wishing you a wonderful Sunday, and Happy Mother's Day to all in the UK.<br />

She turned 6 and in honor of her birthday she got to be student of the week at school, which involves a daily activity: bring a poster to school about yourself, bring someone to school to read to the class; ... you get the idea. Add to this a music performance her class was giving on Tuesday evening; 100 days at Kindergarten on Friday day, and a Spanish festival on Friday night. Yup, quite the busy week!<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/24728431224/in/dateposted-public/" title="100 days of school = dress like you are 100 years old"><img alt="100 days of school = dress like you are 100 years old" height="500" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1550/24728431224_31e46c49eb.jpg" width="375" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />

<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
I hadn't heard of the 100 days of school activity prior to this year, but essentially the kindergartners get to celebrate their 100th day by dressing as though they are 100 years old. Typically I'd go out and hunt for something, but given the hectic schedule we went searching through the closets at home. A simple dress and cardigan and a few props later, we were ready! The plastic glasses were a party giveaway, the faux pearls from a previous Christmas party, and maybe you recognize the shawl? <a href="http://sticks-strings.blogspot.com/2012/08/handspun-henslowe.html">It is the Handspun Henslow that I made many moons ago</a>.
<br /><br />
On top of the school activities, we've been working on the aprons for the birthday party. That's right "we". I can't tell you how pleased I was that Naomi wanted to play an active role in making these for her friends. Cutting out the sleeve/pocket pattern, measuring and cutting the ribbons, and helping me stitch (sat on my lap, her hands on mine as we guide the fabric through the machine). I was really impressed with how she got on.<br />

The party was earlier today and they had such a wonderful time. If you are in Colorado/Denver area, we went to Hot Pots in Littleton, and it is a great place with the most helpful staff. If you have been following me for some time you know that:<br />
a) I love to make party favors and gifts<br />
b) I have a tendency to leave the making of said favors and gifts to the last minute<br />
This year is no exception!<br />
<br />
Given the kiddos will be painting, I thought a fun apron would be a sweet thing for them to wear at the party and take home afterwards. I found 2 strong candidates via Pinterest:<br />
<a href="http://www.aestheticnest.com/2013/03/sewing-childs-reversible-fat-quarter.html" target="_blank">1. Aesthetic Nest: Children's Reversible Fat Quarter Apron</a><br />
<a href="http://www.browneyesplusblue.com/projects/" target="_blank">2. Brown Eyes plus Blue: Pinafore Apron</a><br />
<br />
There's something very appealing to me about the cool and utilitarian vibe of #2, and I had a vision of how this could look with the mochi mochi dots from my stash. However Naomi preferred #1, hands down. And what's not to love about this bright patterned apron with the whimsical details.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/24877374990/in/dateposted-public/" title="Apron"><img alt="Apron" height="500" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1660/24877374990_121d8ae18c.jpg" width="300" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
So, we started with a rummage through my fabric stash and found this fabulous children's print: It is a <a href="http://kokka-fabric.com/en/">Kokka fabric</a> called Hello Animals by designer <a href="http://nancywolff.com/?page_id=16" target="_blank">Nancy Wolff</a>. The backing will be a solid hot pink Kona cotton. The ribbons and pom poms were picked up at Jo-Ann fabric.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/25079769311/in/dateposted-public/" title="Fabric for apron"><img alt="Fabric for apron" height="335" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1673/25079769311_aea5366314.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I made a couple of modifications to the original pattern:<br />
1. I added both pockets to the 'front' of my reversible apron, and added some additional pom pom trim detail to them<br />
2. I did not add a button and button hole for the neck ribbon. Instead I cut the ribbon at about 18 inches, so that it sleeps over Naomi's head. In fairness, this is a snug fit, so I may alter the other versions to either use a velcro closure at the back of the neck, or simply add 2 lengths of ribbon that can be tied in a bow at the back of the neck.<br />
<br />
et Voila! I am delighted with how the prototype turned out. The rest of my Sunday will be in mass production :)<br />

I decided that this would be a fun opportunity for Naomi and I to work on a craft project together. I found this great tutorial for creating tie dye with Turmeric: <a href="http://www.highondiy.com/natural-tie-dye-fabric-pillow-diy/" target="_blank">Natural Tie Dye Pillow from High on DIY</a>. We had everything we needed at home already so it was perfect! And the color that the turmeric creates is fabulous and sings that Spring is on the way!<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/24398723503/in/dateposted-public/" title="Collage Tie Dye"><img alt="Collage Tie Dye" height="500" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1458/24398723503_7a36f93e76.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
This project was simple enough for a little one to work on (except the boiling part of course - that was my domain). She was delighted with the end result, and shared this as her 'Good thing' at school that day. By the way, I love that her school reinforces the idea of looking for the good in each day by encouraging the kiddos to share their 'good things' with the class.<br />
<br />
A good thing for me: I took Friday off work to go to the zoo with my family. It seems people and animals alike had the same idea - it was a perfect day to be outdoors! We got to see some lion cubs, the bears, mountain sheep, etc. etc. and feed the lorikeets. I <i>loved</i> seeing the bears, but feeding the lorikeets was the highlight of the day for Naomi and I.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/24730048800/in/dateposted-public/" title="Collage Lorikeet"><img alt="Collage Lorikeet" height="250" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1676/24730048800_8e3c288995.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Other good things - I splurged on some more yarn. This is 'high twist sock' from Pigeonroof Studios. I've yet to figure out what to make with this as there are only 240 yards. I could see possibly pairing with some other yarn in my stash and use this as a border on a shawl. Or maybe use on its own to make a hat. What are your thoughts?
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/24658038949/in/dateposted-public/" title="High Twist Sock PRS"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1559/24658038949_5ce43b019d.jpg" width="500" height="335" alt="High Twist Sock PRS"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<br /><br />
But for now, and in honor of the day, I will spend a little time on this Valentine's cross stitch from the Frosted Pumpkin Stitchery:
<br /><br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/24730133030/in/dateposted-public/" title="Valentines"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1442/24730133030_558fcda1b1.jpg" width="500" height="335" alt="Valentines"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<br /><br />
Wishing you a wonderful Valentine's day! <br />

<br />
<br />
Each year I watch the Superbowl. I can't say I am an avid fan of American football, but I do love this event - the excitement of the build up, the shows, the camaraderie, parties, and of course this marketing gal loves the commercials. This year has been especially interesting to watch the support for the local team who have made it to the big game, and a young daughter getting indoctrinated at school, with 'United in Orange' days and other festive events. The indoctrination has worked - I have received her request that we go to a local party store so that we can decorations for the game! :)
<br />
<br />
<br />
I will also be working on a newly cast-on knitting project during the game - this is <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/clapo-ktus">Clapo-Ktus</a>. It is a wonderful combination of 2 popular patterns: <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/clapotis" target="_blank"> Clapotis</a> and <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baktus-scarf" target="_blank">Baktus</a>. <br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/24249651873/in/dateposted-public/" title="Clapoktus"><img alt="Clapoktus" height="375" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1504/24249651873_d7a6e1443b.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I have a Clapotis that I knit many moons ago and it may be one of my most loved finished knits (and looking at the date on Flickr, my Clapotis is almost 10 years old!). This modification of the original seemed like a fun addition to my wardrobe. It is also perfect plane knitting, and later this afternoon, game knitting!
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
The yarn that I am using is Skein Top Drawer Sock. Not only is colorway divine, but the yarn is ridiculously soft. It is a joy to work with.
<br />

<br />
<br />
Wishing you a great day ahead, and 'Go Broncos!'

<br />
<br />
<a href="http://blog.allyouknitislove.com/">All You Knit is Love</a> is also the name of a yarn store in the Barri Gotic area of Barcelona, Spain. I had the good fortune to visit this shop last week while travelling for work. It is nestled in a labyrinth of old cobbled streets, interesting buildings, unique shops and is a stone's throw from the Picasso Museum. Knowing my free time would be limited I had done my research ahead of time and was able to spend my last evening on this trip hunting out gifts for my family and seeking out this store. I was not disappointed. <br />
<br />
The first thing that captured my attention is the creative window display of a snowman made from skeins of yarn. Looking up you notice that the signage for the store is a play on the mosaics for which Gaudi, and Barcelona, is known. Inside is a rustic charm with a wide variety of yarns and notions, some of the brands I recognized - Koigu, Malabrigo etc - and there were others which were new to me (and naturally needed to come home with a small sampling). The gentleman in the store was very happy to let me snap pictures, browse, ooh and aah to my heart's content, while my gracious non-knitter work colleague sat cozily in one of their arm chairs and relaxed. At checkout there were additional details that made this such a gem -- the business card for the store doubles as a needle gauge, and the fabric labels that were added to my linen yarn included a handy tape measure print.

<br /><br />
The trip included a couple of other highlights: Upon arriving in Barcelona and settling into the hotel, I wanted to check out my surroundings and stretch my legs. I headed towards Las Ramblas and wandered to a <a href="http://www.barcelonaturisme.com/wv3/en/page/469/boqueria-market.html">fabulous market</a> with its colorful displays of fresh fruits and vegetables, dried fruits and nuts, chillis, seafood... A true delight for the senses with the bright colours, the smells of fresh fruits, and the bustle of people happily picking up their groceries. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92572520@N00/24605811981/in/dateposted-public/" title="20160125_084826"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1570/24605811981_b8173f87f6.jpg" width="500" height="281" alt="20160125_084826"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<br />
The other highlight was a team building event hosted by <a href="http://www.bcnkitchen.com/en/">BCNKitchen</a> where we enjoyed spending time with our colleagues from around the globe while we were instructed, prepped and then ate this incredibly delicious dinner of a variety of tapas. I've seen a place locally that hosts similar listen-learn-prep-eat activities and will be checking this out for sure - it was enormously enjoyable.<br />
